With the last few films of Akshay Kumar not being good entertainers and the poor promotions had taken its toll on the initial craze for the movie. Joker has however performed better than expected. Better than expected only because there were no expectations at all. It is a completely predictable movie and not very long making it tolerably good being riddled with a few puns, good choreography and screenplay. Joker Review

Story
Scene shift, Agastya, our hero (Akshay Kumar) is a US scientist who is in the search of extra-planetary life. Although he makes serious efforts he has nothing to show in the results to the sponsors who give him a deadline of one month so he can be continued to be funded. At this exact time he receives word that his father is seriously ill and rushes back to his village abandoning the work along with his diva girlfriend Sonakshi Sinha.
The village is filled with basket cases. Agasthya's brother (Shreyas Talpade) has a strange way of speaking altogether, his father (Darshan Jariawala) is cross-eyed and a friend who can only speak at a blaring loud level. To add to the nut-cases another teacher who is convinced that the WWII is still on. On reaching the village Akshay finds that the illness was fake but he wanted to help the people in the village who had been experiencing the worst situation.
As mentioned earlier, Pagalpur is a non-existent place for the government as it was not on the maps anywhere. No water, electricity, roads or any such services. Seeing no avenues to seek help within the village, he moves to the neighboring village for help.He tries to make the media believe that the extra-terrestrial world is creating crop circles in the village of Pagalpur and attract them to the village. Some untimely songs which are well choreographed are cued up and things start to get brighter. But Agastya’s competitor Simon Goeback, too obviously fake a name, (Alexx Onell) calls the whole thing a set up and a hoax in Pagalpur.
How the thing sorts out is better watched on the screen as it already seems a bit loose.
Analysis :
The
title itself is too simple but has been very apt for the movie. In
short this movie is too simple to be a movie in the first place. Don't
even question the logic of the movie; you are only asking to be
disappointed. Every single minute of the movie is clearly predictable
making it not a good watch. What you can appreciate is a few dialogues and puns, Simon Goeback, and Ayega song is worth waiting as it comes at an impeccable timing.
What I feel is that Agastya could have gone back without any hesitation. The reason Kunder shows in the movie is more of a forced attempt to make people accept that he had to stay back. How can you believe that the crop circles which were confirmed by several scientists renowned from the world over be dismissed by one Simon Goeback almost in no time.
If I were in the army scene surrounding the forest, I would have thought better to hide in the forest and stay mum to get them not open fire.
Performance :
Akshay
Kumar could have done a lot better to make the movie worth the buy.
Other actors overact or merely read their lines. Sonakshi Sinha has not
much of a role but to merely cling to Akshay Kumar which she does
decently well. The brother, Shreyas Talpade is also pretty good with his
gibberish all throughout the movie. Luckily for the audience Minissha
Lamba doesn't stay long on the screen as the reporter. Darshan Jariwala
and Asrani are truly commendable with their roles. Asrani can definitely
tickly your funny bones with a soft feather while he assumes that WWII
is still on.Shirish Kunder had not much of a role to do with the narrow predicable script but he does his job. Editing could have been better and not so choppy. Gaurav Dagaonkar and G. V. Prakash Kumar’s songs are enjoyable especially since the screenplay is decently good with the bright visual effects.. Sudeep Chatterjee and Anay Goswami’s cinematography is laudable.
